New lights for Santa's Christmas tree
The Gist: Retired Sacramento firefighters Anita and John Lack organized a group of local volunteers outside M&M Real Estate at 9008 Elk Grove Blvd. on Oct. 3 to string brand-new lights on Santa's Christmas tree. Armed with 5,000 bulbs, breakfast, and lunch, the crew set out to replace old strands damaged by hungry squirrels, continuing a 20-year labor of love for the Lack family.
Why It Matters: The tree is a beloved piece of history, even serving as the backdrop for a Lack family marriage proposal over the years. Restoring the tree ensures Old Town keeps its festive charm and stays ready to brighten up the holiday season. Head down to Old Town Elk Grove on Nov. 28 for the Dickens Street Faire!
Inside Elk Grove's Special Waste Facility
The Gist: Members of the fall Elk Grove 101 cohort recently received a behind-the-scenes tour of the City’s Special Waste Collection Center at 9255 Disposal Lane. The hands-on visit gave residents a firsthand look at how household hazardous materials are safely handled, processed, and recycled after leaving local homes.
Why It Matters: The Elk Grove 101 program gives locals a direct line to understanding how municipal services work to keep neighborhoods safe and clean. Knowing where to properly drop off hazardous waste prevents harmful chemicals from ending up in local landfills, protecting community waste workers and keeping the environment healthy for everyone.
