Hope everyone is staying cool out there! If you have stepped outside past noon lately, you know the valley heat is not messing around. It looks like the city is actually working on some plans to get us more street shade and cooler transit stops, which sounds pretty good right about now.

On top of that, we found a local breakfast spot serving up plates so big you might need a nap afterward. Check out the full rundown below for local updates, food spots, and fun events happening around town.

Elk Grove’s 10U All-Stars Are World Series Bound

The Gist: Sacramento Public Library is preparing the Elk Grove branch for its move into the new location at 9260 Elk Grove Boulevard. The new building is expected to bring more room for children, teens, community gatherings, study space, a makerspace, and a Library of Things collection.
Why It Matters: The library has always been one of Old Town’s community anchors. A larger, updated space gives families, students, readers, and neighbors more room to actually use it.
Elk Grove Wants Streets Ready For Hotter Days
The Gist: Elk Grove is developing a Heat-Ready Mobility Plan focused on making streets, sidewalks, bikeways, bus stops, and other transportation facilities safer during extreme heat. The city is asking residents to share where additional shade, cooling features, or other improvements would help most.
Why It Matters: Heat affects more than afternoon plans. It can make walking, biking, waiting for a bus, and getting around without a car harder or unsafe, especially for children, seniors, and outdoor workers.

Breakfast That Does Not Play Small

9101 Laguna Main Street, Suite 190, Elk Grove, CA
Jamie’s Cafe is a family-owned breakfast and lunch spot built around fresh, affordable comfort food. It is casual, friendly, and very serious about making sure nobody leaves the table wondering whether they ate enough.
The homemade country fried steak comes covered in country gravy with eggs, potatoes, and a biscuit or toast. Deep-fried strawberry French toast piles strawberry sauce, powdered sugar, and whipped cream onto battered Texas toast, while Dad’s Mashup combines biscuits, eggs, three breakfast meats, peppers, potatoes, cheese, and gravy.
There are lighter choices too, but this feels like the place for arriving hungry and committing to the plan.

A Secret Garden Worth Finding

8450 West Stockton Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA
The Secret Garden has been family-owned and operated since 2002, and it is much more than a row of plants beside a parking lot. The nursery feels made for wandering, with succulents, cacti, pottery, fountains, statuary, garden decor, and a gift shop full of unusual finds.
Its nursery focuses on plants suited to our hot, dry climate. Visitors can walk through three sun-exposure zones, explore the Cactus Walk, and get help choosing plants for containers, shade, or full-sun gardens. The shop also carries organic fertilizers and pest-control products.
Even four-legged garden assistants are welcome.
Skip the Typical Resort This Summer. Stay in a Centuries-Old Sicilian Village Instead.
Casa Gratteri offers beautifully restored homes in Gratteri, a hidden mountain town in Sicily with sweeping views, deep history, and zero crowds. Full concierge service, a private chef on request, and modern finishes throughout. This is the kind of trip people talk about for the rest of their lives.
