Sometimes you just need a giant plate of familiar, comforting food at the end of a long week. We recently stopped by a family-owned Mexican restaurant on Bond Road that always hits the spot. Sharing these little neighborhood gems with all of you is easily the best part of putting this newsletter together.

Thank you for reading and sharing it with your friends. Grab a taco, enjoy the warm evenings, and have a fantastic weekend.

What Should Happen To The Old Library?

The Gist: With the Elk Grove Library preparing to move into its new building at 9260 Elk Grove Boulevard, the city has launched “Beyond Books,” a community discussion about the future of the former branch at 8900 Elk Grove Boulevard. Residents can share ideas through an online survey, with public workshops planned for September at District56.

Why It Matters: The old branch sits at an important Old Town corner and has served generations of local families. Its next use could shape that part of Elk Grove for years.

What’s Next: Recommendations are expected to reach the City Council in December.

Ten Startups Make The Pitch Elk Grove Finals

The Gist: Ten companies have advanced to the final round of the fifth annual Pitch Elk Grove startup competition. The finalists were chosen from a record field of 109 applicants and will present their businesses during the live competition at District56.

Why It Matters: Pitch Elk Grove gives founders a local stage while bringing entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, and business leaders together in one room. It is also another sign that the city is working to grow more companies close to home.

What’s Next: The live final takes place September 3 at District56.

A Bond Road Mexican Standby

8868 Bond Road, Elk Grove, CA

Sabor A Mexico has been serving traditional Mexican food to Elk Grove and the Sacramento area for more than a decade. The family-owned restaurant keeps things comfortable and familiar, with a full menu, friendly service, weekday happy hour, and the kind of dining room that works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for a family dinner.

The menu covers plenty of ground. Chile verde, chile colorado, carne asada, chicken and shrimp fajitas, chile rellenos, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, seafood plates, and breakfast dishes all make an appearance. There are margaritas too, which may help narrow down your plans.

A reliable neighborhood option when the table wants something warm, filling, and uncomplicated.

Old Things With New Possibilities

9056 Elk Grove Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA

The Red Door is a small Old Town shop for people who enjoy furniture and home pieces with some history behind them. The store specializes in vintage decor with a French country cottage feel, mixing antique furniture, repurposed finds, old trunks, armoires, books, silver, dinnerware, and jewelry.

It is also an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint stockist, so shoppers looking to revive an old dresser or take on a weekend furniture project can find paint, waxes, brushes, and finishing supplies in the same place.

The shop rewards slow browsing. There is usually something tucked into a corner that you did not know you were looking for.
