There’s a lot to look forward to around Elk Grove right now. A new Barnes & Noble is officially opening soon, bringing a big bookstore back to town just in time for fall reading season.

This weekend is busy too, with music by the lake, local concerts, family events, trivia, and even a Spartan race for anyone feeling particularly ambitious. Grab a coffee, check the calendar, and pick something exciting!

Grand opening alert: Barnes & Noble

The Gist: The wait is officially over for local book lovers! The new Barnes & Noble at 8120 Elk Grove Boulevard is set to open its doors on September 16, 2026, at 9:00 AM. Author Tarah DeWitt will serve as the honorary ribbon cutter and host a book signing for her latest romance novel, Lost and Found, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Why It Matters Ever since Borders closed, Elk Grove readers have had to trek out to Arden, Folsom, or Roseville just to browse big-box bookshelves in person. Having a dedicated national bookstore right in our backyard gives local page-turners a cozy gathering spot to grab a coffee, pick up physical books, and enjoy midnight release events without the long commute.

What's Next

  • Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting & Signing: Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM with author Tarah DeWitt.

  • Prepaid Book Reservation Window: In-store reservations available September 16–28 for event access.

  • Threshing Day Midnight Release Party: Monday, September 28, 2026, from 9:00 PM to midnight (leading into the September 29 book release).

A century of Friday night football

The Gist: Elk Grove High celebrated 100 years of football with its Blue & Gold Kick-Off Dinner at the SES Hall, complete with dinner, raffles, and auctions. The program started in 1926 under coach Harold Cunningham, grew into a 1980s powerhouse, and produced NFL players Lance Briggs and Ryan Dinwiddie from its undefeated 1998 team.

Why It Matters: For a lot of local families, Herd football is a multi-generational tradition, and this milestone kicks off the new season with some real pride. The Thundering Herd open the 2026 season this fall under head coach John Heffernan.

The art of the arm-long dosa

There is always plenty of room at Mr Dosa tables for bold, lingering heat.

They serve deep South and North Indian flavors made for sharing. The paper-thin masala dosa is the star, but the tangy gongura chicken biryani and puffed chole bhature hold their own. Paired with bright chutneys and a chilled mango lassi, it is a lingering meal meant for crisping evenings.

Skip the big-box mattress blitz

9055 Locust St Ste C10, Elk Grove

As Labor Day promos start popping up everywhere, skipping the big retail push would feel pretty good at Elk Grove Mattress & Furniture. Owner Brian runs a barebones warehouse setup that keeps prices 50 to 80 percent below traditional retail, with queen mattresses starting at only $150 and optional financing.

He answers questions directly, straps purchases to cars, or coordinates fast local delivery, himself. Keep an eye on their socials for seasonal sales!
