Elk Grove's new library opens Oct. 10

The Gist: The city and Sacramento Public Library will hold a grand opening for the new 18,000-square-foot Elk Grove Library at 9260 Elk Grove Blvd. on Saturday, Oct. 10. Celebrations begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. followed by public entry at 11 a.m., featuring family entertainment, activities, and refreshments.

Why It Matters: Families finally gain a roomier, single-level space to gather, study, and learn after outgrowing the old two-story location on Elk Grove Boulevard. The site also celebrates our roots with "Radiant Eddy," a streetlight sculpture honoring Harriet Eddy.

County adds 2 new open space preserves

The Gist: The Sacramento Valley Conservancy and Westervelt Ecological Services added two new open space preserves to Sac County this summer. The 125-acre Crevis Creek Oak Woodland Preserve connects to Deer Creek Hills Preserve to protect blue oak woodlands, while the 118-acre Golden Hills Preserve secures open grassland for Swainson’s Hawk foraging.

Why It Matters: As urban development continues to expand, connecting these contiguous open spaces safeguards critical wildlife corridors and protects habitats that support hundreds of native species.
