From a garage to a boxing ring
The Gist: Darren Sosa started H.U.S.T.L.E Fitness and Boxing in a garage. Now the military veteran has a commercial gym in Elk Grove, complete with a new boxing ring. He celebrated its grand opening October 17, after the business marked its first anniversary in August.
Why It Matters: You don't need boxing experience to learn the footwork: coaches offer individual and group sessions organized by age, gender and skill level.
A local head start on affordable housing
The Gist: An Elk Grove address or job could move your household ahead in the city's affordable-housing lottery. The council approved a Local Preference Program October 14 for city-supported rental and ownership housing. To qualify, at least one household member must live in Elk Grove or have a local job or job offer averaging at least 20 hours weekly.
Why It Matters: You'll need proof of your local ties, such as a utility bill or pay stub. Regular income limits still apply, and preference doesn't guarantee a home.
