A Neighbor’s Tribute To America

The Gist: Longtime Elk Grove resident and retired Air Force veteran Bob Turner painted his garage door into a large American flag mural ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. The display is outside his home on Polhemus Drive near Old Town, where he has lived for more than 40 years.

Why It Matters: It is a small street-level story, but those are often the ones that make a neighborhood feel personal. This one brings a little color, memory, and Fourth of July spirit to the week.

Recycling Help Is Coming To More Communities

The Gist: Elk Grove’s Recycling & Waste team is expanding hands-on outreach for multi-family communities. Staff recently visited Vintage Creek Apartments to answer questions, share sorting tools, and deliver care packages with organics pails, fridge magnets, coloring books, and Special Waste Collection Center information.

Why It Matters: Recycling rules can get confusing fast, especially in apartment communities. Meeting residents where they live makes it easier for households to sort correctly without guessing.

A Romantic Little Italian Escape

9632 Emerald Oak Drive, Elk Grove, CA

Palermo Ristorante Italiano is a family-owned and operated Elk Grove dinner spot built around the kind of Italian meal that feels better when you are not rushing. The dining room leans romantic, the wine list is part of the plan, and the whole place has that “let’s actually sit down tonight” energy.

The menu keeps it classic with eggplant parmigiana, calamari fritti, mussels mostarda, minestrone, Sicilian salad, and pastas you can pair with vodka cream, marinara, Alfredo, pesto, or meat sauce. There is also tiramisu, zabaione, and Sicilian cannoli if you believe dinner should end properly.

A nice one to keep in mind when the week needs a calmer corner.

A Main Street Gallery With Soul

9635 Elk Grove Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA

Annie Peony Fine Art Gallery is part gallery, part studio, and part teaching space, centered around professional fine artist Annie Peony, also known as Guo Xiang Zhang. The gallery shows and sells original fine art paintings, and it also offers art tutoring for young students and adults.

Annie’s work blends oil painting, Chinese painting, ink, and watercolor, with a style shaped by both Eastern and Western techniques. The space has become a creative stop on Main Street for anyone who wants to see local art up close instead of only scrolling past it.

It is a good reminder that Elk Grove’s creative side is not hiding. It is right there on Elk Grove Florin Road.
